What is Mishima Technique?

Mishima is a technique where you inlay either slip, underglaze, or even clay into a contrasting clay body. In Julia’s case, she is inlaying what looks to be either underglaze, stain, or colored slip onto her mugs.

The process for inlaying color involves using wax resist on leather hard clay to cover the area you want to have the design on, carving away the wax resist to create your design, and filling the carved areas with the underglaze, slip, or clay of your choice. Once you are done carving then you let the clay become bone dry and then bisque fire the work. Bisquing the work will cause the wax to melt off and leave you with a clean surface to glaze fire. If you’re worried about the wax not melting off completely then bisque firing again will ensure that all work is completely clean of contaminants.
