Artist Mike Griffin, featured artist @ Charlie Cummings Gallery
Mike Griffin’s compelling pottery is a wondrous blend of inspirations that come together to make a a delightful, surprising whole. Sometimes resembling structures monumental like architecture and megaliths and at others calling to mind craft objects and tools made with other materials than clay, Mike uses hand building, wheel throwing, and assembling as needed to construct his appealing forms. Floral patterns suggest textiles and decorative arts and bring a softness to some forms. Other surfaces and forms suggest corrugated metal and call to mind old farming equipment. Playful gestures like striking, bright lines across a gray field or abstract shapes light up his forms, suggesting lively graphics in video games or the colorful designs of sports uniforms. Mike brings a range of interests and life experiences to this work, leaving nothing expected and everything lively. His pots are an expression of the joy of making and playing in the studio and the joy passed from artist to user when handmade pots leave the studio and join us in the everyday currents of life. They have a satisfying feel and heft in the hands. This collection is filled with surprises, and we can say from experience that Mike’s pots are real conversation starters.
Mike Griffin maintains his studio in upstate New York, and he shows nationally. In addition to making spectacular pottery, Mike has been a golf pro for about twenty years and teaches at and manages a very busy golf course in the Finger Lakes Region in the summer months. In winter he works part-time as a PSIA Ski Instructor and enjoys lots of making time in his clay studio.
