I am obsessed with paperclay, I have yet to make my own batch but am getting everything ready- in the meantime I am using Laguna’s Max’s Paperclay in my clay sculpture class- it is only 4% cellulose by weight so I have mostly been using it through normal techniques, because I am not sure if it will really have enough green strength to do non-linear approaches, but I have two sculptures in progress since both have to do some time drying, and at home soon I will be making B clay with a little grog into a 1:3 sculptural mix. I am also considering adding a small amount, like a 1:5 or even less, amount of cellulose to the clay that I will be using to throw with, I have heard mixed things about throwing with it but I figure there would be a lot of advantages and with a lesser amount of cellulose it shouldn’t change the body of the clay too much for throwing. I’m really excited, I’ve read both books I could get my hands on about paperclay, have read everything I can find on Ceramic Arts Network and am trying to find a community of people interested in it. I also am planning on looking up as many of the technical articles written in ceramics journals about it, I’m a scientist but don’t know what journal search things are best for covering the ceramic technical journals.
