About Me

Introduction

I am Nivia Toro, a potter from the Caribbean. I’m from Puerto Rico, currently working in the city of San Juan. I create wheel-thrown and hand-built functional sculptures. I focus on making creative sculptural handles inspired by sea creatures and monsters. In the future I would like to pursue formal graduated studies on Ceramics; I have a bachelor’s on Comparative Literature currently finishing a Masters on the same area.

I have enjoyed academic studies and understanding ceramics at an chemical and geological level are very important aspects to me and I am constantly searching for that knowledge wherever I can. At the moment I am learning how to create my own glazes and slowly building my glaze “lab”.

What I Love about Ceramics

I love the connection with Mother Earth. It is fascinating the infinite possibilities that clay has to offer us from the moment we touch it, sometimes just “playing” with it, with no finite purpose can be so powerful and fulfilling.

I also love how simple but complex and deep the world of Ceramics can be. It is infinite and one lifetime is not enough.

How I started with ceramics

Powered by anxiety on 2018 I searched for a way to channel it. I have always loved to work with my hands and my partner suggested a clay workshop a friend of his was offering. I jumped to the opportunity with zero expectations and I was very surprised at my instant love and ability to work with the medium. I continued to explore it, still with a “this is just a hobby” mentality, but eventually, pretty fast, it became my full time job.

On December 2019 “Croziers Pottery” was officially born. Since summer of 2020 I have been sharing what I have learned with my community and the support has been astonishing. I keep on studying and learning and cannot wait to see what the future holds for this life’s project.
