About Me
Introduction | My name is Paul V. Nicholas. I grew up in Los Angeles county. Married at 20 in ‘85 and we relocated to the PNW in ‘89. I consider Washington state my home now. I began my ceramics explorations late in life so no university education in ceramics. I attended community college for ceramics, 5 quarters. Workshops, and online reading and YouTube for as much continued learning and inspiration. I have acquired an extensive library of ceramics/pottery books. As well as, a very extensive collection of Ceramics Monthly (almost 4 complete decades), and Pottery Making Illustrated magazines (nearly 15 years worth). I read a lot and fill my mind with too many ideas and techniques. I want to try them all! I’m still working on trying to find my own voice. I make mostly one offs and make many notes so that I can repeat a result when it is especially exciting. I experiment with texture and many different forms of decorative surfaces. I have had the privilege of being involved with a community wood fired Anagama kiln during the 2019-2020 firing season. The Historic East Creek Anagama near Willamina Oregon. I am most interested in reduction and wood fired surfaces and ash glazes. |
What I Love about Ceramics | What I love about ceramics/pottery is the never ending ways that clay can be shaped and decorated. It’s a sensuous and tactical medium that never gets boring to work with. I could live 10 lifetimes and I’d still be learning how to manipulate and make wonderful useful and decorative objects. It is also a medium that keeps you humble. |
How I started with ceramics | My high school offered a ceramics class. That was my first real experience with clay. That was 1980. I took one semester. I hadn’t touched clay again until 2001. I took 5 quarters at community college. Been at it ever since. |
What inspires me | Other artists. Nature, geological , plant and animal life. I’m very interested in producing organic and natural texture and colors. |
