About Me
Introduction | My name is Kelly Barone, and I live in Asheville, NC. This is a beautiful, inspirational place to live with a very lively arts scene. I am a teacher, so I make wheel-thrown, hand-built, and sculptural pieces and mostly fire cone 5-6 oxidation and Raku. I’ve been working in clay for 20 years, and have tried just about every forming and firing method! I have a small studio with 14 members. I am interested in finding a way to advocate for and sell the work of mine and my members. I have never really been interested in online sales before since I participated in shows and studio sales. I also love to cook and ride my motorcycle!

What I Love about Ceramics | Ceramics is a creative outlet for my tactile way of learning. I am very sensual – touch, smell, and taste are important in my aesthetics. I also love having members in my studio. Although I do skill instruction, they help me to see things differently, to try things I might have thought “undoable”, and to laugh and and banter together in community. |
How I started with ceramics | 20 years ago I took my first community wheel throwing class. I’ve never looked back. I poured myself into 4 years of intense learning in a community studio with two of the best teachers I could have ever hoped for. (Clayscapes in Syracuse, NY – Tim See and Shawn McGuire). Since I had been teaching instrumental music and then became an Assistant Superintendent of Schools, I first felt like I couldn’t give up my day job for ceramics. The pay difference was pretty substantial! However, I money, quit school and started making and teaching clay. I love this life! |
What inspires me | I take my inspiration from so many things and people. Certainly nature – but mostly from other artists and as a result of conversations, learning, and experimenting. I have been fortunate to be inspired by many workshop teachers including, Linda McFarling, Akira Sataki, and John Britt.

What I'm working on at the moment | I am just finishing a project for my home, making carved ceramic tiles for a bathroom backsplash. I am also a lover of teapots, so I keep working out different forms for them. |
My Artist Statement | I make objects from clay, and strive to achieve a balance of human senses in the process. I seek to enhance the life of the user, observer, and critic through thoughtful and skillful work. |
