About Me

Introduction

I am a ceramic designer, teacher, jewellery creator – in short, an all-round creative.
I studied studying ceramic design in the 80s and for thirty-five years after that I taught design to young students and adults at various colleges and high schools.
I have had two solo exhibitions and have participated in many group shows. I have also often been selected to exhibit at the South African Potters Association’s annual exhibitions.
I live in Cape Town, South Africa where I work from River’s End Studio in Glencairn, Western Cape. River’s End doubles as a teaching studio and the space where I work on my own to make a broad range of ceramics, from affordable jewellery to bespoke homeware and original sculptural work.
For the past two years, I have served on the committee of Ceramics Southern Africa, Western Cape. I am part of the team which is working to establish an internship programme for CSA, Western Cape, and see this as yet another way to fulfil my passion for skills’ transfer and the handing-down of our craft.
I live on the coast and snorkel weekly, drifting through an underwater world of kelp forests. My husband is a marine conservationist and this too has contributed to my fascination and obsession with the sea. Much of my work is inspired by what is hidden beneath the waves and I continue to explore organic shapes within ceramics.

What I Love about Ceramics

I love absolutely every thing about clay ! from the tactile quality to its unpredictable and sometimes frustrating nature…

How I started with ceramics

Went to study graphic design, did a short course and was hooked ,changed direction

What inspires me

I am inspired by the ocean and that is where my main focus is at present but like clay i am unpredictable and might change coarse and go off in another direction .However i do try to make some sort of social commentary though my work .

What I'm working on at the moment

Had a close encounter with a jelly fish while snorkelling so am a bit obsessed at present.

My Artist Statement

I am currently fascinated by the underwater world of kelp forests and a lot of my work is inspired by what is hidden beneath the waves.

I love to experiment so i am constantly changing how i approach my work be it though the use of different clays or decorating techniques at present i have become obsessed with trying to create a water colour type of effect on the surfaces of my work.
