My Ceramics

In the studio I like to do

Handbuilding, Throwing on the Wheel, Sculpting, Slip casting, Everything to do with Ceramics

Pottery Wheel

Potter's Mate

Clay body

Earthenware, Stoneware, Porcelain

Clay Brand

I mainly use a paper clay that I make myself from a mix of Ashraf Hanna Super white raku and a smooth clay, Scarva 130. They fire to a warmish white – important as I often only use copper carbonate to emphasise the texture. It also has a huge firing range and is lovely to hand-build with. The Super White Raku is very expensive so this reduces the overall cost a little

Kiln Type

Electric Kiln, Raku Kiln

Kiln Atmosphere

Oxidation Atmosphere

Temperature

Bisque to 1000C and between 1020C to 1220C depending on which clay I'm using.

Glaze

If using mainly clear glazes one at 1140C and the other around 1220C.  Also raku and I also obvara fire – see https://www.facebook.com/Obvara-firing-technique-372511962812858 for more information on this technique – I started the page in 2011 (I think).

What I Love about Ceramics

The possibilities are endless – there are so many aspects of working with clay.  I enjoy that it has also enabled me to travel widely to share with others my knowledge and also to keep learning form others.

How I started with ceramics

I first saw someone throw on the potter’s wheel in the late 1960’s and really wanted to do that, but life had other ideas and  it took many years before I had the opportunity.  I began studying crafts in 1995 and went on to specialise in pottery and ceramics since then.

What inspires me

Nature and the natural world – I want to celebrate nature – not imitate it.

What I'm working on at the moment

My latest body of work is an amalgamation of various strands that I have been exploring over the past couple of years.  The abstract organic forms suggest aspects of nature.  My inspiration comes from some of the microscopic images I have been studying and are a homage to Ernst Haeckel, the 19th Century German biologist, naturalist and artist who discovered, described and named thousands of new species.  During his lifetime Haeckel made numerous images, including many of protozoa, known as radiolarians.

These illustrations are a source of continuing inspiration and I see the resulting pieces as celebrations of the complexity of the natural world.

My Artist Statement

Clay has been used as a means of expression for thousands of years – it is our most elemental material – when fired, the ceramic material becomes an alchemical combination of geology, chemistry, painting and three dimensional form.

Clay has always fascinated me as a material, but I only got the opportunity to explore the material as a means of expression in middle-age.  These, more than twenty, years have been the most exciting and stimulating of my life.

I have been lucky to have been able to combine my love of travelling with my love of clay and enjoy the experimentation and solving technical difficulties that I am often confronted with on my journeys.  The materiality of clay attracts me and I work intuitively in response to the natural world and my immediate situation.

The work is hand-built using my own paper clay and finished with oxides.
