Hi, my name is Jenny Chan. I’m a ceramic artist, originally from Hong Kong, now I’m based in the UK. In this course, I’ll be demonstrating how to make your own face mask. I will walk you through every step of creating the mask using either air-dried or firing clay.

I was born in Hong Kong, and much of my childhood was spent on the serene island of Nauru, where we didn’t have the distractions of TV or even a radio. I grew up exploring my surroundings and had a natural inclination for tinkering from a young age.
In 2017, I embarked on a new chapter in my life, feeling uncertain about my abilities after being a housewife for 16 years. It was a challenging time, marked by self-doubt and personal difficulties. Despite these obstacles, I took a leap of faith and started creating ceramic sculptures. This new venture brought me a sense of peace and fulfillment, becoming a perfect way to ease the anxiety and loneliness of being a new immigrant in the UK.
Being self-taught, I had to learn and grow through trial and error. With each piece, I honed my skills, pouring my heart into crafting unique figurative sculptures, each with its own story to tell. My inspiration comes from the genuine and honest qualities I see in people, as well as the themes of vitality, healing, and inner peace. Rooted in my Chinese heritage, my work carries a touch of my origins. The true essence of my art lies in the emotions it evokes through my reflective and expressive sculptures.
