In this workshop, I will be showing how to create expressive animal models in clay. I will explain how to make your clay forms by using a simple newspaper armature as the starting point. Then how to add clay in ways that reflect the subject’s anatomy and form. The technique is quick to do and very gestural so the pieces needn’t look too laboured over!

After this workshop, you could be making amazing work like this:
James Ort is a wildlife artist from Oxfordshire, in the UK. He specialises in creating ceramic animals and often combines other materials into his work too, such as wire and sheet metal.
Having had a lifelong fascination with wildlife and a former career in conservation, James attempts to capture the vibrancy and dynamism of his wild subjects. Using his knowledge of anatomy and form, he pushes ceramic and wire to their limits and has developed some innovative techniques to help achieve this. Colour and gestural underglazing bring his pieces to life.
James has been heavily influenced by his Grandfather, Brian Price Thomas who illustrated a number of the Ladybird Children Books (including the Gingerbread Man).
James also has a love & natural aptitude for teaching. He teaches adults and children how to make ceramic animals or wire weekend courses from the Phoenix Studio – a small art school he manages in the UK.
