I will be demonstrating how I test and prepare my clay prior to forming it on the wheel, and assembling it as composite forms with hand-built elements. I will also be sharing some surface treatment options, as well as details on how I fire the pieces.

Ella Mendoza (b. 1993) completed her second degree in Art History from the University of the Philippines. A painting major by training, she started doing ceramics in 2015 and has since been an active presence in the field.

Mendoza’s body of works, comprised primarily of multiple ceramic pieces, deliberately composed in series and as installations, traverse between the notion of function and sculpture as a nod to the vital role of ceramics throughout periods in history, whilst further expanding experience of the material. The forming process entailed, likewise, is a synthesis of traditional forming techniques (either thrown on the potter’s wheel or formed by hand) adapted to produce forms that simulate mechanically produced objects such as tin cans, pet bottles, plastic cups, packets, and sachets. The use of clay as medium is central to the themes of Mendoza’s works, as it activates a sense of familiarity in the unconventional integration of material and form.
