David Hicks – Artist Talk

Hi, I’m David Hicks, a ceramic artist based in central California, specifically in Visalia, California.

Today, I’d like to take you on a journey into my creative world, sharing my work and shedding light on the motivations and methods behind it.

Let’s dive in. To me, the essence of my artistic process lies in staying true to who I am. When I speak of truthfulness, I’m not implying that there’s deceit or dishonesty in art; I acknowledge that art can be both brutally honest and shrouded in mystery.

As a creator, my primary commitment is to be authentic to myself, as it’s crucial for my artistic satisfaction. We all have countless choices for how to spend our time on this planet, and for me, being in my studio is a form of reciprocation.

You could say it’s almost hedonistic, not in the sense of base pleasures, but in the pursuit of an inner joy. I need to be in my studio because I genuinely want to be there, not out of obligation or an unspoken compulsion to create. I’m there because I love it, because I derive immense enjoyment from it. Ultimately, I aim to leave my studio each day with a profound sense of fulfillment, knowing that my time has been well invested.

About David Hicks

David Hicks, born in 1977 in the USA, is an accomplished artist and educator residing in his hometown of Visalia, California. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Ceramic Arts from California State University Long Beach in 2003 and later pursued a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Ceramics from Alfred University in New York, completing his studies in 2006.

Hicks’ artistic journey has seen him showcase his talent through solo exhibitions at prominent venues such as Diane Rosenstein Gallery in Los Angeles, Mindy Solomon Gallery in Miami, and Edward Cella Art & Architecture in West Hollywood, California.

His creations have found a permanent place in esteemed collections, including the American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA) in Pomona, California, the Arizona State University Museum in Tempe, the Boise Museum of Art in Idaho, and the U.S. Department of State’s prestigious Art in Embassies Collection in Washington, DC, among several others.
