Amy Rae Hill – How to paint a space teapot

Hello, my name is Amy Rae Hill, and I’m a ceramic space painter from North Bend, Washington.

In my workshop, we’re going to dive deep into the world of glazing, and I’m excited to show you how to give your teapot’s surface a lunar twist.

We’ll be exploring a range of low-fire pottery glazing techniques, and together, we’ll conjure up some space-inspired wonders. Through both additive and subtractive glazing methods, you’ll master the art of crafting a ceramic surface that convincingly resembles the lunar landscape.

One of the most captivating aspects of this creative journey is how the colors undergo a magical transformation inside the kiln. It’s worth noting that each color evolves in its own unique way during this process. To give you a sneak peek into this enchanting color-changing phenomenon, I’ve included some images below that showcase the captivating magic in action.

About Amy Rae Hill

Amy Rae Hill is a ceramic painter whose work depicts dramatic celestial scenes on pottery.  After receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Western Washington University, she worked at a pottery painting studio to develop her current craft.  She paints with low-fire pottery glaze on earthenware.

Space is a perfect stage to play out any human experience.  Because there is still so much we don’t know about the depths of the cosmos, our imaginations can roam free and explore real human desires, fears, passions, and love in a celestial wonderland.  I believe truths about humanity can sometimes be more easily digested in a fantastical setting.  In 2022, we battle emotional isolation: political and societal divides deepen as we take on a pandemic, climate change and social injustices.  I want to encourage a compassionate, caring society through the narratives in my work.  My figures face the unknown with bravery and kindness, and they do it together.

These artworks are meant to dwell in your home.  We face them in the casual moments of our day: tea time, a morning cup of coffee, or an evening glass of wine.  And since 2020, we have lived much of our lives within our homes out of necessary isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic.  But we are all existing in the same galaxy, looking at the same stars, feeling the same exhilaration about cosmic possibilities.  So while we may be physically alone in our homes, these celestial ceramics remind us during our daily rituals that we are connected to each other through an all-encompassing universe.
