I just inherited a bunch of store bought plaster molds. Anything from dragons and softee’s to Christmas decorations and doll parts. I am looking forward to learning this aspect of clay.
I Am wondering if anyone knows of a better way of disposing of old molds without sending them to the dump? I want to find any way to recycle them for use that…

The only thing I can think of is to use them to fill in space making new molds.

Does anyone have simple to follow instructions for multi part molds? I understand making the plaster etc. As I make single part molds. Can’t get the brain to see how I would start making the sections.

Hi, is there anyone here that has suggestions where to search for good clear explanation in either books, videos or workshops to learn how to make plaster molds?
-
If you read a few posts down, there is a person who used to do that as his job. I would contact him. The only molds I have made recently were hump molds.
Best advice i ever got was to watch out for undercuts as they will always get caught and wreck the mold and possibly the item itself. -
Also don’t forget to use a release agent so the plaster does not stick to your form.

Hi, My name is Sandi and I am from California. I just acquired a slip casting table, slip mixer and about 500 molds. I did ceramics about 30 years ago. I burned up my kiln and quit doing ceramics. In 2019 I took a ceramics class at our local college and was hooked again. I live about 2 hours from Laguna Clay Company and I purchased about 300…

I could use some advice. I want to make a mold of some brooches. The last mold I made doesn’t work, the brooches don’t want to come out in one piece, they get stuck by the rim (see first picture). I don’t want to make the same mistake 🙈
So now, I think will make a two-piece mold. My questions are:1. How big should the pouring hole be? The…

super cute! Look, I wonder why you wanna make a pouring mould in first place. if it is only because they stuck on the edges, I guess you might have more issues with pouring in such tiny scale. before you get to fill the whole mould, the pouring hole might get stuck quickly after you start . I have also made tini tiny moulds like yours and I… Read more

Love those tiny faces 🙂 I think you might have more success just press molding into the moulds with plastic clay (on a slightly drier stage, not sticky wet), and pulling them out while they are still plastic as well.

Forgotten the plaster to water ratio by weight. Anyone know by heart ? Thx
-
Doesn’t it depend on the type of plaster?
I use Vigo 60 and the ratio is 1 liter to 1,5 kilo.

Hi! Good to be in this group!!! I had a job making molds in Rhode Island many years ago. I loved it, so many possibilities. Right now I am working mostly on the wheel. Both techniques are great. Lots of fun! DBJ
