The Kiln Book by Frederick L. Olsen (ISBN 0-801907071-7) is a good place to start for anyone wanting to build a pottery kiln. There are chapters on principles of design, materials and methods of construction, cross-/down-/up- draft kilns, fuels etc. I’m in the process of designing a small gas fired kiln and this book addresses most of my questions. Best of luck with your kiln building.

I bought the book! However, is an early version. Great source of information. Not ready for a build such as those kilns in the book. For the most part it seems that these kiln builds are a huge project that I am not able to do,yet. Maybe the newer versions of this book have other kiln build information. I’ve been thinking that possibly downsizing the kiln build to a smaller scale could be the answer. Thank you for your suggestion.

I found the book, didn’t buy it yet but is on my wish list. The information about the Kiln Book is interesting. I definitely plan on getting a copy soon!
