Erin Furimsky – Hump Molds and Surface Decoration

Have you ever wanted to create beautifully decorated functional ware?

If you are ready to satiate your own craving to decorate, come to this online workshop about merging 2-D ceramic surface with a simple 3-D form.

To begin with Erin will show the basics of creating a small hump mold from which she will construct a shallow bowl or a plate.

Erin will be using slabs on top of bisqued hump molds to create distinctive forms. The resulting small scale functional form will then become our canvas for surface enhancement.

In this workshop, you’re going to learn:
 -How to create your own bisqued hump molds
 -How to use your new hump molds to make your functional ware
 -Different techniques for layering underglaze colors
 -How to add patterns, and drawings with direct image transfer
 -How to inlay, and sgraffito to create layered and rich surfaces

No matter what your level of clay experience or type of clay you uses; Erin will leave with you with a myriad of new surface techniques and ideas to explore at home.

About Erin Furimsky

I create ceramic sculptures that are swelled, carved, and glazed meticulously. Elements of familiar domestic objects are extracted and reconstructed, allowing me to investigate not only their aesthetic qualities, but also their multiple symbolic functions within our lives. These familiar objects expand with volume becoming bulbous sensual forms that puff out of their own skin, like a pregnant belly or an overstuffed arm chair. I am inspired by the language of ornament enveloping objects and the human form.

Snippets and sections of detailed and deliberate ornament are drawn, painted, and printed in an unabashedly blissful manner.  These carefully chosen fragments and layers accumulate organically across the surface of the piece. I consider myself an explorer, seeking new ways of layering color, pattern, and marks. Multiple repetitive marks represent the ticking of time, as I methodically create dots, dashes, and swirls. In areas, these abstract patterns overflow because of their abundance or disperse like seeds in the wind. One might recognize floral motifs, snowflakes, microbes or calligraphy within the ambiguous multi-layered surfaces. I establish a sense of order, coupling overlapping lines and areas of solid color.

The sculptures are full and weighty yet parts feel buoyant, as if they could float away carrying the rest along with them. I investigate where these two realms, groundedness and weightlessness overlap, reflecting the liminal state I often feel in daily life.
