I have been creating Colored Porcelain Nerikome Artwork since 1991.
I have always been intrigued by patterns whether they are natural in the environment or cultural. I am inspired by the incredible variety of patterns I see during my travels, since every Nation has its own ideas of color harmony and pattern arrangement. The wild freedom of one culture is as enticing as the strict symmetry of another.
I love the challenge of placing complicated, vibrant free form patterns within a strictly defined space. The pattern often feels as though it has only been contained for the briefest moment on the surface.
I choose to work with translucent porcelains since I am constantly investigating methods of contrasting the brilliant colors of my clay with the quiet beauty of bright white porcelain.
