Growing up and growing old are often considered to go hand in hand. Bear’s pieces express a gentle rejection of this association by using themes of cuteness and play in her functional ceramic art. Illustrations from cartoons and comics serve as occasional inspiration, but whimsy does not overtake a grounded maturity and utility. Through form and function, Bear hopes to create opportunities for others to experience brief moments of joy and lightness.
Bear is a Taiwanese ceramicist who resides in Saskatoon, Canada. Her practice has quickly evolved from part-time hobby to full-time occupation, starting in 2018. Bear draws on nature for many of her subjects, from fungus to furry creatures. Most of Bear’s work is hand-thrown functional ware: techniques span detailed carving, vibrant underglaze painting, and colourful slip experiments.
