Elina Esther Jurado – Intro to Terra Sigillata

Hi, my name is Elina Esther Jurado and in this workshop you will learn what terra sigillata is, how to make terra sigillata, and how you can test and experiment with application on functional or sculptural work.

Over the course of this workshop we will learn how to prepare and siphon our terrasig using RedArt and XX Saggar clays. Once our base terrasig is made we will create different colors by mixing ratios of mason stains and oxides using the line blend testing method. After we create our palettes, we will go over application and burnishing techniques in combination with glaze.

You will learn how terra sigillata can accentuate the subtle textures of your clay body without the use of glaze.

Required Materials & Equipment List:

5 lbs of Red Art Clay
5 lbs of XX Saggar Clay (prefered)/ Goldart Clay/ OM4
Water
4 tbs Mason Stain 6600 or any mason stain of your choosing
Particle Respirator
2 Tall transparent containers (plastic or glass is fine)
4 containers/cups for mixing terrasig colors
1 pint of Darvan 7 Deflocculant
Gram scale
Siphon hose or turkey baster
Measuring cups
Immersion/hand mixer
Hake or bamboo brushes
Microfiber or chamois cloth

About Elina Esther Jurado

Elina Esther Jurado is a working artist from Miami, Florida who currently lives and works in Kansas City, MO. She received her BFA in Ceramics in 2013 from the Kansas City Art Institute. Her work has led to her to intern with several studios in Kansas City and Miami, as well as being honored the Partnership Scholarship to attend a summer workshop at the Penland School of Craft in 2012. After graduating, she was accepted into the two year residency program at the Carbondale Clay Center in Carbondale, CO. Returning to Kansas City in 2015, she was accepted as a two year resident at the KC Clay Guild in 2018. During her time as a resident, she was able to develop a body of work to launch her business EJ Ceramic Designs in 2021. Most recently, Elina was a invited artist at the 2022 Midwest Pottery Fest organized by KC Urban Potters.
