Y Material 156-2161
Y Material 156-2161 is a type of white firing Stoneware that is recommended for firing at a range of 1200-1300C (2200 F and 2336 F). It has an indicative texture rating of 7-8, meaning it has a smooth texture with some coarseness. It is similar to ‘T’ Material, another type of grogged clay.
This particular clay is suitable for larger sculpture forms, handbuilding, and raku use. It has a low shrinkage rate and is resistant to warping, making it very resilient and tolerant. It also has a low thermal expansion rate and is very refractory.
In the context of clay, thermal expansion rate refers to how much the clay expands or contracts with changes in temperature. When clay is fired, it undergoes a physical change as it transforms from a malleable substance to a hardened, permanent material. During this transformation, clay will expand or contract depending on the firing temperature and the composition of the clay. The thermal expansion rate of a clay determines how much it will expand or contract during this process.
Refractory, on the other hand, refers to a material’s ability to withstand high temperatures without breaking down or melting. In the context of clay, a refractory clay can withstand high firing temperatures without losing its shape or structure. This makes it ideal for use in applications where high temperatures are required, such as in kiln firing or raku firing.
This type of clay comes in a standard full bag size of 12.5Kg, making it easy to purchase in larger quantities for projects. Overall, the low thermal expansion rate and high refractory properties of Y Material 156-2161 make it a desirable choice for artists and sculptors who require a clay that can withstand high firing temperatures without warping or losing its shape.
