Influential Surroundings: Mood of the Pond
Currently exploring two forms to best express the mood of the pond. 1st avenue is an altered mei ping vase with carved neck/rim and embellished outward curved shoulders to allow glazes to decorate surface (water and weather, seasons via color.) 2nd avenue is a wide, altered bowl with inward tilting rim, giving a larger surface to carve/sculpt surface decoration.
Both of these forms are new to me, I chose them in part to give me a challenge to improve my throwing of vessels that are pushed out and have strong shoulders- I want to get better at throwing shoulders. I also chose forms that allow glazes to be the star and interact with some surface textures that are carved or sculpted on.
For glaze application, I like the idea of spraying / overlapping the glazes to let them fall where they may, versus brushing them on. It’s like the weather sort of dumps heat or rain or wind onto a pond without any specific target in mind- the plants and wildlife react to whatever is thrown at them.
