• This past week and a half I attended a fantastic workshop in NY with Tim See primarily exploring alternative firing methods, but also did a bit of throwing as well. One of the surprising take-aways for me was a new form for me, the Mei Ping vase, which I really enjoy the interaction of between the shoulders and the foot, embellished by the narrow waist. I also like the concept of the tight neck intended to hold tall straight stems at an angle (their ends being held by the foot). Initially I thought for this project I would be only exploring bowl and wide open forms, as my intent is to capture “the pond” as my influencing creative space. However, the Mei Ping form is really interesting to me for this project, as I can see possibly a better display surface over the outward bowing curves of the vase, contrasting the way a bowl “holds” the design on the contrary. I am thinking now I am going to explore the surface decoration on two different forms, bowl and vase, and see how those different forms feel. This will also give me a little experience making two specific forms I am new at (a bowl with a lip facing inward at an acute angle to showcase surface decoration will also be new to me.)
