About Me

Introduction

Hi! Bonjour!

My name is Julie-Claude. I am originally from Montreal, QC, Canada and I am now doing a year long residency at Medicine Hat, AB, Canada. I make sculptural work using hanbuilding and slip casting. I recently started making functional object!

I love walking, bird watching and cartoons!

My Artist Statement

I am interested in the narrative potential in the objects of our daily lives. I believe that our quotidian objects reveal to us the ways that we have lived, as well as the ways that we are living. Therefore, I believe that setting up new ways to encounter these objects will offer us the opportunity to reflect differently on ourselves. Within my work in ceramics, I explore the materiality of glaze and clay body. I am curious about how ceramic can disguise itself as other material or objects and create an uncanny feeling. Using this knowledge, I construct objects with humorous and cartoonish aspects with the intention of projecting our reflections on those objects themselves. My hope is that a cartoonish exaggeration of our quotidian objects might help transform the reflections that we possess about them in our daily lives. I also enjoy making objects comical because I believe it makes the intention of the art piece accessible. Especially, since cartoons are a part of mass culture. My recent work revolves around objects that are disposable and tied to our habits of consumption. How products insert themselves in our memories and create feelings like nostalgia?
