About Me

Introduction

My name is Carol Knudsen I am a semi retired artist living in San Diego, Ca.  I am enjoying making many kinds of pieces in clay. So far I have made cups, bowls, utilitarian kitchen pieces, flower pots, wind chimes, bells, vases, boxes and more.  I have learned to use the potters wheel re. centering and am exploring making newer, bigger pieces with 3 different kinds of clay.

I have a kiln which is old and I have never used it because I am not sure it is safe and I would rather get a newish digital kiln. Meanwhile, I have been lucky to be in a ceramic class where we they fire our pieces for us weekly. And recently I have found a local clay studio which can also fire pieces for me at a higher temperature which opens up possibilities for making prettier glazes and using different clay.

What I Love about Ceramics

I like that it is so easy to make all kinds of things, I can choose the amount of money I want to put into it, and I’m having fun learning so many methods (thanks to YouTube ceramic artists’s videos).

How I started with ceramics

As I child I had some experiences with clay, but not much. Then as an adult and as an already accomplished artist, I secured a job sculpting clay products for a company. They made reproductions from the pieces I sculpted. Now, many decades later, I’m exploring home-made and class made ceramics / pottery and just having fun doing whatever I’m inspired to make.

What I'm working on at the moment

I just made 2 new mugs from the high fire speckled (and very gritty) buff colored clay I recently bought. I want to make several more pieces with it during the summer before returning to my other ceramics class that uses low fire clay.  I just saw an interesting item called an “olla” of which I may make variatious designs.

My Artist Statement

I have enjoyed being an artist my whole life and am lucky to still be making new things daily.

I made a living from various kinds of artwork and was happy that I could work at something I like and do well.

Now I am retirement age and excited to make many more things of my choosing. I am grateful for my good health and eyesite. : )

My CV

Worked for Blake Publishing Co., Gallup McKinley Cty schools, Stoneyard, Inc., Rick Engineering, The Architectural Art, Unity San Diego, Michaels Craft Stores, and many individual clients who purchased my artworks.
