Hi all! I have a question about warped plates. My plates always seem to warp the same way – they bow up in the center outwards, so anything put in the middle would roll to the rim. I’ve included some pics although it is hard to get a good angle of the warping.

      My process is this:

      – hand roll out slab with rolling pin

      – move as best I can to drywall board

      – compress with rib

      – leave to dry a bit

      – pinch edges to create rim

      – let dry to just before leather hard

      – carve my design with needle

      – add underglaze to lines

      – wipe underglaze away with sponge

      – leave on board to dry completely (this is the time it warps)

Usually that’s it, but this time I also wiped the bottom with a sponge to even out the moisture (in theory) before drying completely.

This happens almost every time I make a plate, especially with the larger ones. Any advice?

      • I have similar issues with the two different clay bodies I use, so I’m curious what advice others will give. Beyond what you describe I try to dry my plates very slowly on the drywall board, keep them wrapped for as long as I can. I also have socks stuffed with rice that I lay on plates that seems to help a bit.
