| Introduction |
My name is Clare Unger. I am a ceramic artist now living in Sydney, Australia but I was born and spent my early life in Zimbabwe. I have a Bachelor of Fine Art (printmaking) (University of Cape Town) and have a Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Ceramics (The Northern Sydney Institute of Tafe). A collection of inherited textiles inspired me to begin stitching and looking for ways to incorporate this into my ceramics which has resulted in my current work. Â Â The desire to tell stories and connect with others through shared memories is a powerful driver in the making of my work.

| What I Love about Ceramics |
I love everything about ceramics. Clay is so malleable you can make anything you want. The only limit is your own imagination.
|
| How I started with ceramics |
I was lucky to grow up in a home where there were a lot of ceramics but I first studied ceramics at a community college while living in London in 1996.
|
| What inspires me |
I am inspired by the stories embedded in handmade objects. Textiles and hand stitching are great sources of inspiration to me.
|
| What I'm working on at the moment |
At the moment I am focusing on making functional ceramics as a way of connecting with my audience through the shared associations of both hand stitching and objects for domestic use.
|
| My Artist Statement |
I use my own hand stitched fabric ‘samplers ‘ to make a mold with which I imprint clay. I then use a slab building technique to create my functional ceramic pieces.
