About Me
Introduction | Debbie Weinmann Melbourne Australia Both functional and sculptural handmade ceramics |
What I Love about Ceramics | I love the feel, the messiness and the magic that can happen. I love working with natural material that feels like it has no limits. I love that there is constantly more to learn. |
How I started with ceramics | Trialling all different wheel classes and then moving onto challenge myself by enrolling in a Diploma in Ceramics. Already having a professional background in Occupational Therapy I went on to graduate in 2014 from Holmesglen TAFE with a Diploma in Ceramics and haven’t stopped making since then |
What inspires me | Inspired by the ever evolving challenge that clay presents, the never ending possibilities of varying clay bodies, glaze finishes and different techniques. I take inspiration from my environment and the objects around me. I often find myself looking at day to day objects and imagining what they would look like if made from clay. |
What I'm working on at the moment | Coil vases raw and textured on the outside , glossy and smooth on the inside |
My Artist Statement | Working with clay requires patience, perseverance and preparation for failure while constantly striving for perfection along the way. One could say it’s really like the same pathway for many things in life. Clay represents a freedom to create with a natural material that has no limits. Its transformation is limited only by the imagination. Engaging with clay can be totally absorbing, it has the ability to make time stand still. My enjoyment comes from creating forms that explore volume, proportion, posture, shape and colour. It allows me to create intuitively and abstractly and is a never ending journey of learning. I find my style is constantly changing and in that way everything remains interesting for me. My inspiration mostly comes from the making process itself, often things unfold before me through the simple process of play and experimentation. I love the meditative process of throwing on the wheel but I also love the freedom of hand building as it allows me opportunities to push the boundaries. I like to keep my forms simple, sometimes letting the glaze speak or just the pure rawness appeal. The objective I set for my work is to be functional and artful and what I love the most is sending my pieces out to the world for people to enjoy. |
My CV | DEBBIE WEINMANN CERAMICS After graduating from Latrobe University as an Occupational Therapist, Debbie Weinmann spent her earlier years working full time in rehabilitation in both public and private hospital settings. Years later she went on to complete her Diploma in Ceramics.. Now as a ceramicist, when not on the wheel Debbie still finds time to work at a voluntary emergency medical Service Organisation, Hatzolah, where she feels she can give back to the community as well as still practicing as an Occupational Therapist. With her passion in ceramics Debbie finds herself constantly playing with the process ofthe unseen and unkown, enjoying watching her forms unfold, following it where it leads trying to remain open to explore, challenge, change and refine. http://www.debbieweinmannceramics.com Instagram @debbieweinmannceramics Ph 0418828728 Australian artist, born in Melbourne, 1967 DEBBIE WEINMANN CERAMICS 2010-2014 Post Graduate SELECTED GROUP EXHIBITIONS 2019 Group show Valley Potters Inc “Ignite” Memo Gallery Healsville 2019 Group show “Flesh” No Vacancy Gallery . 2019 Ceramic Artist’s solo exhibition “Bold Intentions” Malvern Artists’ Society 2018 Group show 40th Anniversary Valley Potters Inc “Enthralled” No Vacancy Gallery .
