About Me
Introduction | I am Monica van den Berg. I am a sculptor and work mainly in clay. My current work consist of ceramic vessels and ceramic heads that I paint with under glaze. I have a full time studio in Johannesburg South Africa. My work has been exhibited in South Africa and are part of private collections in South Africa and abroad. |
What I Love about Ceramics | I love to work with clay and are currently working in black clay which gives you a beautiful back ground to paint on. |
How I started with ceramics | I started with sculpture classes in 2008 with Amalie von Maltitz in Johannesburg. After several years mainly working in abstract forms and casting my work in bronze I moved to more stylized forms. |
What inspires me | The human head was my great inspiration for the past few years. I love colour and that inspires me to use under glazed for the design on my latest vessels. |
What I'm working on at the moment | I am working on different forms of vessels that I use as a canvas to paint on. |
My Artist Statement | BIO:   MONICA VAN DEN BERG The current work contains the thought of creating different styles of heads as the artist experiences the world around her. Although the work does not reflect the realistic form of a head she tries to stylise the work in such a way that it still reveals part of the realistic form. She is a full time sculptor with her own studio. Sha has taken up sculptor classes with Amalie von Maltitz in 2008. She has done the Mentorship Program with John Shirley in 2011. Her work has been accepted in the Ceramics SA exhibitions since 2010. She received a Merit Award at the Ceramics SA National Exhibition in 2010. At the Ceramics Gauteng Regional Exhibition 2014 she received the Merit Award. She also received the Ultra Furn Award at the Ceramics Gauteng Regional Exhibition 2018. She received The Zaks Kiln Award at the Ceramics Gauteng Regional Exhibition in 2021.
