About Me
Introduction | Hi, I’m Maia – I’m an emerging artist in ceramics, and have been a painter for many years. I’m interested in sculptural narrative work and creating detailed illustrations on functional pieces. I create my own ceramic works which align aesthetically and conceptually with my painting practice, and I also make functional ceramics with my twin sister under the name Bad Mood Design |
How I started with ceramics | I had the opportunity to participate in a mentor/mentee program with ceramic artist Paula Cooley. Thank you to both Paula Cooley and Carole Epp who encouraged and supported me in that process. |
What inspires me | Folktales and fairytales, feminist surrealism |
What I'm working on at the moment | Learning how to run my own electric kiln |
My Artist Statement | Stark graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Saskatchewan in 2015. An invested interest in body politics led to various research outlets; eventually focusing on concepts of the Grotesque and the Uncanny, specifically as these concepts are described in folktales and fairytales. Stark often draws on personal memories as well as her Icelandic, Irish, & Scottish heritage to form imagery in her paintings, drawings, and ceramic work. Stark’s works often portray a duplicated figure, a sort of self portrait, pulling from her experience as an identical twin to contextualize narrative and myth.
