About Me

Introduction

Hi,

Chris Pellow from Scotland.
Started on my pottery journey earlier this year, just at the start of the other conference.

I make small batch functional and whimsical wares.  Interested in ANYTHING ceramic related and finding out how to create a suitable body of work to maximise output living in a small house and being housebound.
Loving the Japanese theme this time!!

What I Love about Ceramics

Where do I start.  It has been the love of my life since I was very young.  At 60 I finally got my long yearned kiln and pottery supplies. I am in heaven when I can create.

It is quite an enjoyable experience to be surrounded by a network of friendly, caring and sharing ceramist who encompass such an amount of knowledge.

How I started with ceramics

Many years ago I did a short weekend workshop throwing. I loved it!  But I could not afford a kiln and there were no potteries nearby where I would be able to fire anything I made.. So I abandoned that plan.

I then found Polymer Clay which was close as I could come to the real thing. I learned many skills and progressed to teaching.  The whole 8 years of this allowed me to progress faster on my actual clay journey.

Earlier this year I learned about a microwave kiln for ceramics and bought one. While I waited for it to arrive from Italy, I bought some Ashraf Hannah Raku clay and started making tiny things.  Just the feeling of clay on my hands transported me into another world and even before the small microwave kiln had arrived, I had ordered my real kiln.  It took another 3 months to get here.

But I LOVE every time I put my hands to the clay.

What inspires me

Just about everything.  I get inspired by a colour pattern on tv, by the colours around my garden and the view over the Loch where we live.  I am inspired by my memories of the places I visted, the architecture, the art work.
I get inspired by emotions and music..

What I'm working on at the moment

Finding a better system to allow me to use my small kiln to the maximum at each firing.
Currently small cups and plates and some quirky pots.
