About Me

Introduction

I’m Jill Taylor, Seriously Whimsical. I’ve worked with ceramics full time for over 35 years, taking many classes with my Sensei, Marc Lancet in northern California, then working alone with the help of my dear husband, a talented artist in his own right. I have a full studio on my property, now in the Pacific NW.  I’m also a mom, a grandmother and a great grandmother.

What I Love about Ceramics

The infinite possibilities.

How I started with ceramics

I became totally obsessed like many others in school while taking heavy math and science classes. I wanted to “play in the mud” for fun and relaxation. My whole life changed.

What inspires me

Figurative and faces, miniatures. Porcelain when vitrified. Fanciful subjects. Combining sculptural elements with “functional” work

There is a continuing interest in lidded figurative vessels I call interactive sculptures, the head are stoppers for the body/bottle. They can be turned to change the expression of the piece. Somewhere between an urn and a doll.

Also, boats are a recurring subject since my spouse is a boat designer and aficionado

What I'm working on at the moment

This week, I’m looking into possible 3D printing of ornaments. I’ve wanted to for some time but only this week discovered a little tutorial on how to design a style and then have them printed up by a service. If this is possible, it’s very exciting.

I’m also doing more in stoneware again, having predominantly worked in Grolleg Porcelain for the past few years. It’s almost impossible to pin myself down. Life is short!

My Artist Statement

My favorite subjects are figurative, especially faces, but do many miniature animals and people. I have difficulty limiting myself to just one or even a few different subjects, styles or techniques so I have decision fatigue a term I just recently learned.

I’ve gone through several phases in my time in the mud but always return to my lidded figurative jars. The head is the stopper and I try to make them so they can turn. I call this “Interactive Sculpture”
