About Me
Introduction | I am Susan Port Deller, originally from King of Prussia, PA and after 15 moves over 37 years and raising 4 incredible children (currently with 6 awesome grandchildren), I am now enjoying life 4 miles from the Atlantic Ocean with my wonderful husband Bill. After 3 careers involving numerous types of Sales and Marketing roles, Property Management & Apt. Guide Publishing, I am now retired and able to enjoy my pottery passion full-time! I love to create a mix of wheel-thrown, slab built & sculpted functional pottery that people can love and enjoy daily — I especially enjoy creating unique everyday useable pieces that will make people smile because in the words of E. E. Cummings, “The most wasted of all days is one without laughter.” I also enjoy creating special pots with sculptures of beloved animals inside mugs or bowls, and creating one-of-a-kind gift items for Weddings, Engagements, Anniversaries, Birthdays, Holidays, New Babies, …) I strive to take as many classes on pottery as possible & learn as much as I can from other pottery experts willing to share their knowledge — & in turn, I promise to share what I learn with others & look forward to creating & helping others to create many more beloved pottery treasures to come! 🥰 |
What I Love about Ceramics | It is very therapeutic and fulfilling to me whenever I can create pottery! I also love to share what I’ve learned with others to see how proud and pleased they become when they too create handmade pottery! |
How I started with ceramics | We were ready to make our 14th move from Virginia to Texas at the beginning of Covid 🙄 due to my husband’s job relocation, so I had to resign from my job and prepare for this move & transition to Caretaker of my Mother with advanced stage dementia & my elderly Father, both who resided with us. So I took a pottery wheel-throwing class (something I’d always wanted to try) at Workhouse Arts in Woodbridge (an old prison converted into an incredible array of creative arts classrooms) as a diversion to all of the caretaking, selling-the-house, and moving work and I definitely caught the pottery passion bug❣️ We then moved to McKinney, Texas during the pandemic and I purchased a Skutt kiln and Bailey wheel upon making this move in order to create a small studio in our new home. Online classes during that time kept me learning and progressing in my clay skills, and I eventually was able to take some classes in the Dallas area as things began to open up. My pottery was a true godsend for me then and I was able to keep my sanity during this extremely challenging time in our lives❣️ |
