About Me

Introduction

I am a self taught ceramist with no formal training.  I have been involved in the medium since 2012 where I attended a pottery class for fun.  Since then I now have my own studio and the clay monster has taken control of my life.  I love to decorate which is borne out from my love of textiles and doodling.  Initially my work was blue design on white porcelain.  This has now migrated to using a raku clay and colour with black lines.  This resonates with me as I am from Durban in South Africa where the skies are bright the colours are vibrant and the patterns are endless.  I employ a self taught gentleman Ivin Molefe who throws the items I require.  My work is mainly functional as I love the idea that a piece can be used everyday and enjoyment is derived each time you look at it or feel it.   I am the chair of the Kwazulu Natal Region of Ceramics Southern Africa.  This is a national organisation that promotes ceramics in South Africa and encourages members with workshops and information to assist them in with their love of ceramics.

My Artist Statement

My work is decorative and my items are mainly hand thrown and functional.
I love them to be slightly quirky and often add slab pieces for handles. My designs involve lots of lines with a combination of colour. My designs often include a combination of florals and geometric design. I like the balance between the two.
I also like to glaze the inside of the piece for functionality and then allow the pattern to create a relief on the outside for a textural experience.

My CV

My work is sold mainly through local craft markets and a few local galleries.
This is always a challenge as galleries demand a large percentage of the proceeds and this can be very impactful on small functional items.
Ceramics Southern Africa has now launched an online shop (ceramicsonline.co.za)
This is very recent and we are hoping that people start to embrace the online experience. I realise it has challenges as I for one like to see a product, touch and feel it before I buy it.
