About Me

Introduction

My name is Prudy Correa, and I’m from the Pueblo of Acoma in New Mexico, USA. I’m a third generation, Native American clay artist. I learned from my grandmother, Marie Miller. I hand build clay storytellers, nativities and pottery using natural earth clay and paints. I’m interested in new techniques and networking with other artists. You can check out my website: https://www.prudycorrea.com

What I Love about Ceramics

I love working with clay, both natural earth clay and paints. Also, I enjoy experimenting and trying out new techniques in ceramics. I use other types of  processed clay or work on ceramic greenware or bisque, just to try other methods and enjoy watching other artists working on their artwork.

How I started with ceramics

I have always been around clay all my life. I stayed with my Grandmother during the summer months and we would go on clay digging excursions or look for natural earth clay paints. We also use yucca leaves for our paint brushes, so we have to gather plenty of yucca to  last us all year. I also, learned from my Mom, and she made huge big olla pottery and put beautiful intricate designs on them. I have several pottery in my collection from both my Grandmother and Mom.

What inspires me

I have always been inspired to try new designs and new techniques especially when I see other artists working on their art. It’s always so wonderful to get up early to work on new art pieces for Art Shows. Last year, all our shows were cancelled and we had to think of other ways to market my pottery. So I decided to get a website put up to help me with sales. It has been a tremendous help and I really enjoy just staying home and working on my clay.

What I'm working on at the moment

Currently, I’m working on large storytellers, human and animal storytellers. I’m also working on potteries with loops and birds on the bowls just like my Grandmother used to make.

My Artist Statement

Acoma pottery is made using native clay dug from local areas and hand processed. I enjoy hand coiling my figures, one of a kind clay sculptures and hand painting designs on them using yucca brushes. I make my own paint brushes from the yucca leaves. Also, the paint I use come from natural clay sand or rocks, like black hemitite and local plants.

My CV

I’m a third- generation clay artist and have been making clay figurines for over 35 years. I participate in the Santa Fe Indian market, Heard Museum, Pueblo Grande Museum, Prescott Art Festival, and Authentic Native Art Festival.  My website: https://www.prudycorrea.com
