About Me
| Introduction | I’m Mitra, from Richmond, Virginia. I’m a beginner potter, having taken my first handbuilding and wheel throwing classes in Fall 2024. I recently closed a business I owned for 26 years (rubber stamp manufacturing) and am taking a year off of work to explore various interests. Ceramics has become a very big focus and I’m excited to learn and grow my skills! |
| What I Love about Ceramics | I love the connection to the earth, getting messy and muddy. I love the meditative quality of the process. And I love the many different directions one can go using such basic materials. |
| How I started with ceramics | I used to dig clay out of a local creek when I was a kid and make pinch pots that I left drying all over my driveway. Nearly 50 years later, I found myself looking to explore creativity for creativity’s sake. I had run a business in a creative industry for nearly 30 years but I wanted to do something more personally fulfilling. I’m a member of an online community of middle aged women that’s based in the UK and during one of our weekly conversations, one of them mentioned the Great Pottery Throwdown so I started watching it and instantly recognized that this medium offered me the ability to make functional objects, which I love, and has a synergy with the skills and techniques I bring with my from many years in papercrafts. So here I am, just beginning but wildly enthusiastic! |
| What inspires me | Nature, travel, connection both with others and the natural world. |
| What I'm working on at the moment | Trying every surface decoration technique I can find. Consistent practice on the wheel and trying to have patience for handbuilding. |
| My Artist Statement | Stay tuned… |
