About Me
Introduction | Hi, I’m Anita Frey, currently living in Des Moines IA. I have been playing in clay since I first discovered it in the ground when I was a little girl. I experimented with hand building and wheel in high school and college but really fell in love with the wheel as an adult. I mostly do thrown work, useable pieces. I’m interested in being more creative with my work and feel less tortured by glazing. I would also like to be more comfortable in running my kiln. |
What I Love about Ceramics | I love throwing the clay and watching what the clay and my hands want to produce. It is also so enjoyable to see a customer find just what they’re looking for or fall in love with a particular piece or glaze. |
How I started with ceramics | In high school we did a segment on clay in art class. I saw this contraption in the back of the room, it was a tall kick wheel. The art teacher knew a little about it and helped with what she knew, I was hooked, she was amazed. |
What inspires me | I miss collaborating and seeing what others are doing since I have my own studio. Watching others and/or seeing others work always inspires me to think in different ways. |
What I'm working on at the moment | I’ve been teaching a couple of children the joys of pottery. Children have such great visions. I have a rack full of bisque ware waiting to be glazed as soon as my commission work is done. I need to photograph everything and get it up on Etsy. |
My Artist Statement | I am grounded to the earth by clay. I try to achieve useable pieces of art that can be enjoyed every day by those who acquire them from me. |
My CV | Award winner with Wisconsin Regional Art Program WRAP Participated in Waunakee WI Artisan Market until moving to Des Moines IA |
