About Me
Introduction | Hello! I am Susan Card and established a studio in Toronto (1986), while studying ceramic design at Sheridan College, subsequent to completing a B.H.Ec. (textiles) and B.F.A. (painting) (University of Manitoba). In 2006, I opened DISH GALLERY + STUDIO in the Toronto Distillery District to make and exhibit my work and the work of other Canadian ceramists in a retail environment. DishGalleryandStudio.com |
What I Love about Ceramics | Ceramics is all inclusive, ever challenging and connects us to our ancient past giving us a sense of our place in our time. |
How I started with ceramics | Living in London in UK after University, I took a few evening courses in art that hooked me on clay. Returning to Canada, I enrolled in Fine Arts at the University of Manitoba and studied art history, painting and ceramics. |
What inspires me | Nature informs my work. As well, my sculptural work often reflects a social comment. |

My Artist Statement | Walking through a forest brings a sensual connection to nature through sights, sounds, scents. The painterly surfaces of my ceramics reference the natural world we all enjoy, respect and need to protect. I find painting in a watercolour style on a white porcelain “canvas” allows the greatest colour development in an electric kiln, whereas smoke firing is a traditional technique I use making jewellery. Using atmospheric gas firing, my glazed ceramics become luscious art pieces to be used as tableware. |
