About Me

Introduction

Penelope, from Australia and live near a beautiful beach.  I am inspired by the forms, shapes and colours of my surrounds especially the sands, skies and rocks.  Love sculptural forms, contemporary pieces and experimenting with different clays, glazes and underglazes.  Love hand building and have a wheel although I am functional ceramics is not my deep passion.  I love making tableware although its the contemporary pieces that really ignited the creativity inside me.

I am also a qualified plantbased nutritionists, self empowerment coach and my husband is a plantbased chef.  We do many festivals and events in Australia and guest speakers .  One of my current projects is making unique tableware that will be used in a Plantbased Vegan Cookbook we are producing.

What I Love about Ceramics

Ceramics takes you to another dimension.  The slow process is tactile, relaxing and quite meditative.  It create something beautiful from the earth seems to connect you.

I love ceramic pieces that are unique and one offs rather than a production of the same pieces.

How I started with ceramics

I wanted to start ceramics years ago, although life swept me in many directions.

I enrolled into a Potters social where I live and many of the teachers and members have been in the industry for decades.  I did a beginners class in hand building and the wheel and the feedback I received was very encouraging.

I am an oil and acrylic painter, photographer and stylist.

What inspires me

I am inspired by created pieces that moves people emotional, where the viewer is mesmerized how it was even made.  Nature inspires me with the beautiful lights, shades, colours and forms.  I take my inspiration from nature and retry to re-create its brilliance.  I would love to create very large piece.  I am also inspired by many of the Japanese contemporary ceramic artists, Allen Wallwork’s body of work and many of other amazing ceramic artists.

Another area I love is contemporary creative functional form pieces like bowls, plates, dishes, teapots etc.  Something that is unique and a one off.

What I'm working on at the moment

I am working on my first Group Exhibition called a Drop in the Ocean.  Exciting and scary.  I am also creating a sculpture piece.

Currently planning a Plant-based Vegan Cookbook, as I am also a qualified Nutritionist, Self Empowerment Coach and will be making all the tableware, plates, dishes, bowls etc for the cookbook.

My Artist Statement

I am currently working on a Drop in the Ocean group exhibition.  My work was inspired by the erosion in the sea rocks, the colours in the sand and sandstone, the water and sky.  Most of our work has a high key colour palettes, where I use soft whites, pastel sand colours and just a pop of contrast colour.

I am also working on a contemporary sculptural piece being the personification of sea rock in the female form, with beautiful curved forms and flowing textures.

As a multi-media artist I combined all skills to create beautiful ceramic pieces with depth, light, shade and texture to draw the viewer to experience the pieces emotionally.
