About Me

Introduction

My name is Carl Crutchfield and I work in cone 6 and 10 stoneware.I graduated with a BFA in ceramics from Southwest Missouri State University.  Upon graduation, I worked in private Christian education for 25+ years as both a teacher and principal.  Retiring in 2005, I reacquainted myself with ceramics by taking classes at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. Since then I have lived and worked in clay in Mobile, Alabama; Wilmington, NC; and now in the Kansas City, Missouri area.

My Artist Statement

Most of my work is Cone 6 oxidation. I prefer to hand build but do some limited throwing also. I enjoy incorporating tongue-in-cheek humor, whimsy, and am often inspired by things I read, song lyrics, and observations of social events. I strive for craftsmanship in my work but otherwise do not take myself  too serious. I do clay for enjoyment, both mine and hopefully others as well.

My CV

I have participated and shown my work in local art fairs, galleries, and local and national shows in Alabama, North Carolina, and Missouri. One of my fondest memories was at Art for the Masses in North Carolina when a lady told me, “Your work makes me smile.” Most recently I was pleased to have my work accepted in a national show two years running at Missouri Western State University.
