About Me
Introduction | My name is Daniela. I was born and raised in Tuscany, Italy. I make Italian majolica with my own twist. I am interested in wheel throwing more than anything lately. |
What I Love about Ceramics | I love everything about ceramics. I love the way it feels in your hands, I love how wheel throwing is a magical experience, with shapes appearing from nowhere right under your hands. I love trimming and creating an interesting foot for my pots. I am determined to get better at it and I am not going to stop trying. I love painting my pieces, like watercolor on clay. |
How I started with ceramics | All my life as a young girl I had wanted to make ceramics. After I graduated from college I lived in Perugia, Italy, for a while. There I stopped by a store where I saw a young man paint on tiles, pots etc. I was mesmerized by his skills as a painter. I had to learn how to do that! So I walked in the store and asked him if I could do some painting as well, and he let me have some of his paints and a few objects to paint at home. He then suggested that I take a bus to Deruta where the whole town makes ceramics, and that I enroll in the local Accademia della Ceramica. So I did, and the rest is history! |
What inspires me | The painting on ceramics of Italian masters is my original inspiration. Lately, amazing potters online have shown me the intricacies of wheel throwing, so they are my inspiration as well. |
What I'm working on at the moment | Right now I am perfecting my technique on the wheel, but I am also learning how to market my pottery, thanks to “The Ceramic School”. I still have a lot to learn and I am looking forward to the rest of my life as a potter. |
My Artist Statement | My majolica is functional earthenware, for the use in the home and the joy of the eyes. It is meant to give comfort and peace. |
My CV | When I first came to the States, my whole life revolved around ceramics and I attended quite a few shows in Rhode Island and Connecticut. Then, mostly for economic reasons, but also to fulfill my other passion, foreign languages, I obtained a Masters Degree in Spanish and I proceeded to teach Italian and Spanish for 27 years. I loved every minute of it, but any chance I got, I would be back in my shed working on the wheel or at my kitchen table painting. I have recently retired and it is time now to go back to being a potter. I am looking forward to the future! |
