About Me

Introduction

Charlotte Collier-Hunter is interested in the alchemy of materials and the four elements in the ancient art of ceramics.

She developed her artistic ideas and craft through an itinerant lifestyle that included sojourns in the UK, France, Italy, Australia and her native New Zealand.

In London she founded Preaface Ceramics, producing ceramic art and bespoke pieces for clients.

What I Love about Ceramics

Sharing food with friends and family, relaxing with a cup of coffee or a lunchtime bowl of soup… these are surely among the most enjoyable parts of the day.

I believe that these moments are much enhanced by the use of handmade pieces. Pots which are made by hand always carry something of the spirit of the maker. I love eating and cooking and I like my pots to celebrate these everyday pleasures.

How I started with ceramics

I did an intensive course in lockdown near the end of 2020 and never looked back

What inspires me

At its most pure, alchemy is a symbolic activity, an allegory of the process whereby humanity’s base nature is transformed into a pure and untainted state. Working with ceramics is pure alchemy; the “Prima Materia” that according to mythology (both Christian and Occult) is given form and then breath.

What I'm working on at the moment

This year I plan on focusing on both the functional aspect of ceramics, bettering my throwing skills and hopefully producing more identical pieces like these stacking ramekins, but also on sculptural pieces and hopefully taking part in more exhibitions.
