About Me

Introduction

My name is Hilary but I am usually called Hilly. I have just moved from Dorset so am setting up studio in a friend’s garden as our cottage shed is too small for anything but the kiln. I love to hand build ceramic pieces especially pods or seeds which represent growth not yet seen. I love texture and take inspirations from the countryside around me. I love the meditative process of producing clay on the wheel or by hand and when making friendship bowls try to focus on that person’s qualities and hope they are imbued in the piece.

What I Love about Ceramics

I love the constant change in the form the clay takes from squishy slip to smooth elastic plasticity on the wheel; the leather-hard surfaces to carve and the transformations which occur in the kiln. pieces reflect my inner feelings and there are days when pieces are fine and light and others when they are more robust. It is the most versatile medium for me and therefor the most liberating

How I started with ceramics

I started in school where I lost interest in Still Life drawing/painting and became a bit disruptive! My friend and I were sent to the clay shed where we could work on different project with not to much interference from the teacher. I studied ceramics at college and then taught art for 35 yrs. I learnt a lot about mending the impossible in clay. Now it is time for me and I only teach very part time.

What inspires me

My childhood in Zimbabwe and later living in Australia informed patterns and shapes. I love collecting seedheads and shells and more recently fossil fragments which I find on the beach. tree structures in the winter and patterns on the sand .

What I'm working on at the moment

I am working on a series of landscape bowls and also the idea of flotsam – free standing or as wall pieces.
My grandson has commissioned buckles and buttons for his fashion show

My Artist Statement
