About Me
Introduction | I’m Jennifer Pak originally from South Korea living in Portland, Oregon for over 40 years. My main focus is on functional pottery that can be used in everyday lives. I love playing and exploring different types of clays using different techniques. If someone asks me what my style is, I would say not having a specific style is my style. Always open for challenges! |
What I Love about Ceramics | Since my main focus is mostly functional pottery, I love how it can be intimate in one’s everyday moments in life. Love and care, joy and happiness poured into each piece can be transferred and shared throughout time and place. Meeting so many beautiful human beings in the clay community is also a great part of what I love about ceramics. |
How I started with ceramics | I was always intrigued by beautiful ceramic dishes, especially those in organic forms and colors, so I collected piece by piece until one day I wanted to get my hands on clay and learn to make on my own. It wasn’t until the summer of 2016, I took a studio class at OCAC (Oregon College or Arts and Craft) that I fell in love with wheel throwing. Ever since then I took two full years of classes that the school offered and never stopped getting my hands muddy. |
What inspires me | Everything the nature has to offer, which are mostly reminding me of most precious memories of my childhood. My mom was so talented at many things that required skills with her hands but she was so natural with plants. I remember our garden with so many flowers and vegetables like, lilac, spray roses, dahlia, gladiolus, sun flowers, 맨드라미, 나팔꽃, 채송화, tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, etc, just to name a few. Those happy memories surrounded by so many beautiful gifts and blessings, are what drives me to share with others by transforming as love and joy into my pots.

What I'm working on at the moment | Hand painted underglaze/glaze designs on mid range porcelain and semi porcelain. |
My Artist Statement | I strive to bring joy into people’s everyday lives through my ceramics. Creating objects with clay brings me the greatest happiness and I hope to make this happiness evident in my work. Inspired by organic forms and nature I constantly explore with color and materiality to share how I see the world around me. |
