About Me
Introduction | Hi! My name is Karolina-Anna Hajna. I’m from Surrey, BC. I’m a ceramic artist with about 12 years of clay experience. I love to experiment with different techniques but hand building ans carving are my mail focus. |
What I Love about Ceramics | I love that I can mold the clay into pretty much anything I can think of. I love to push the boundaries of the material. |
How I started with ceramics | My first experience with clay wasn’t all that great. I was enrolled in a ceramics class at the Surrey Art Gallery when I was in grade 9. I was super shy and…I don’t think that the teacher had a lot of patience for that. Our class was mostly focused on the wheel and I had a really hard time getting anything to center. It resulted in me in tears after every class and swearing I would NEVER ever take another ceramics class again. Well, when I was in my 2nd year of University I had to either take a sculpture (metal and wood class) or Ceramics class to get further in my Fine Arts Program. I chose Ceramics and by the second class I was hooked! I think the key was not to have the class focused on wheel throwing but more hand building and learning a lot of the different techniques to get a well rounded idea of what you can do with the material. Also, the prof was pretty awesome in getting his students interested in learning more then was required for the class. I pretty much lived in that classroom for 2 years. He was the one to push me to apply to NSCAD. I went and I will always be super grateful for those 2 years in that classroom and having a mentor that encouraged me to push my work further. |
What inspires me | I’m inspired by textures and tiny intricate details in plant life on land and underwater, especially coral. |
What I'm working on at the moment | I’m working on getting my home studio ready for clay. Once that is done I’m hoping to make small batches of functional ware while concentrating more on installation and sculptural pieces. |
My Artist Statement | My work is generally inspired my plant life on land and underwater. I work with a number of different techniques like wheel throwing, hand building, slip casting, carving, etc. Pieces are usually functional, sometimes multi-functional, as home decor and ware but I also enjoy exploring sculptural and installation work too. |
