About Me

Introduction

Hi my name is Simone Young I live in Terrey Hills on Sydney’s Northern Beaches Sydney Australia. I make domestic thrown porcelain mid fired but sometimes cone 10 stoneware. As well as contemporary jewellery. I occasionally hand build sculptural work. I am inspired by the Australian bush beaches and my family.

What I Love about Ceramics

I love how clay can be made in to anything you like. It is limited only by your imagination and the size of your kiln. I love how generous and giving the clay community is. I also love how meditative it is. There’s no right or wrong way to use it. Clay is the new yoga right!

How I started with ceramics

I found clay in the creek behind our house. I asked my mum what I should make I was 10 she replied you can make any thing you want clay can be made in to anything you like. I was hooked right there. My mum still has that piece. I made a frog in a pool with a tree and rocks. I put varnish on it but it was never fired. Later I went to hobby ceramics then tried to get into University was rejected and told to go to TAFE (technical and further education) to find out what ceramics was really about. Great advice the teachers there were so great professional and giving of their knowledge. I was there for many years and would still be if it wasn’t defunded by our government. I have a Diploma in Ceramics. I met some wonderful friends there.

What inspires me

The Australian bush and beaches as well as my family. I also love a challenge.

What I'm working on at the moment

I am working on improving my hand building skills.

As well as my glaze technology. I have always struggled with the technical aspects of ceramics.
