About Me

Introduction

Berit Hines, born and raised in Bremen, Germany. I mostly pinch and coil build ceramic vessels and forms that depict a break from symmetrical objects. I like to explore sensual, dramatic shapes and accentuate them with contrasting textures and glazes. Though sculptural, my objects still retain their functionality. I strive to evoke a sense if stillness, represented by suspended movement in each form.

What I Love about Ceramics

The feel, the smell, the transformational aspect, the colors, the textures, all of it.

How I started with ceramics

My mother has a friend who was a potter (now retired). As a child she let me play on her wheel. That is my earliest memory. I took a pottery class as a junior in high school, and later private throwing lessons while a freshman college. I finally made it to art school in my twenties and got my BfA in Ceramics.

What inspires me

Nature, the weather, textures, colors, other artists of all mediums, little things in daily life. Life is a constant discovery.

What I'm working on at the moment

Developing my “Cafe Flatte” collection, an idea that plays with visual illusions in vessels.

My Artist Statement

I approach the composition of my work with spontaneity and immediacy, discovering the form during the process of making it. My work continues to explore form, using surface decoration and texture as an integral part of the piece. I use hand building and throwing techniques to create series of one of a kind vessels and sensual sculptural forms in stoneware.
I am inspired by the Natural World. My visual and tactile vocabulary derives from minimalist traditions of my European background. I strive to evoke an emotional and sensory response with my work and pursue this in my choice of form, as well as refinement of the surface quality.
