About Me
Introduction | My name is Sharon Mitrie. I live in and run a pottery studio in Pretoria, South Africa. The most part of my work is producing functional ceramics, using a high fired stoneware clay. Throwing on the potters wheel, is the making process which is most enjoyable to me. Designing bespoke Murals which are suitable for outdoors or indoors has been a challenge which is rewarding and satisfying. At the moment my interest lies in the challenge of making of glazes, the knowledge of which is shared to an ” elite bunch of creative students”! |
What I Love about Ceramics | Ceramics is fascinating to me because of its diversity and its individuality! I love the fact that Clay always changes ,, presenting forever new challenges. |
How I started with ceramics | Wanting to do sculpture when I began an Arts Diploma, after finishing Matric, the realization that Clay presented both sculptural opportunities and the means to earn a living, enticed me to qualify in Ceramics . The year after receiving the Diploma, I started my studio and have been working with clay on a daily basis ever since. |
What inspires me | Modifying wheel thrown pieces. |
What I'm working on at the moment | At the moment I am working on a commission of dog feeding bowls . For my students , we are working on making new and exciting glazes. |
My Artist Statement | There are is no fancy or eloquent artist statement. On a daily basis, earning a living, has been my ‘modus operandi’. For the last 42 – odd years I have taught many people to make beautiful pots, taught them to respect clay and most of all to love the unexpected results that the Kiln gives. During my pottery career, hundreds of orders, small and large have been successfully completed. Exhibiting my work has been scary at times and rewarding at other times! |
My CV | Obtained a Ceramic Diploma in 1976 at the Pretoria Technical College. May 1977 started a pottery production and teaching studio. After moving premises in 1981 and again in 2007 to my current studio, my business has been ongoing. |
