About Me
Introduction | My name is Jackie Masters, I am a ceramic artist living in Perth Western Australia. Porcelain is my favourite clay to throw with, but I also enjoy playing with wild clay and stoneware clays, as they offer interesting and different effects with my glazes. |
What I Love about Ceramics | I love the challenges of throwing clay and pushing it to its limits. The thrill of creating new textural volcanic glazes is another exciting part of clay that I enjoy. |
How I started with ceramics | I started with clay in my early 20’s at an evening class at Perth Studio Potters. After two terms of attending 1 night per week, my teacher indicated that I had a natural ability and that I should ‘go pot’. It has been the most tremendously engaging journey and I now teach at the very place where it all started for me. It gives me such pleasure to share my love of clay. |
What inspires me | I know it is cliche but the environment. The colours of our Australian bushland and flowers. The sweeping sands of our beaches that stretch into the incredible oceans. |
What I'm working on at the moment | I am working on producing forms and glazes that capture the colours and textures of our Australian bushland, oceans and the rich red of our outback. |
My Artist Statement | The incredible Australian landscape and its enchanting colours provide infinite inspiration for my handmade glazes; from the vivid blues of the ocean, the greens of our bushland to the vibrant reds of the ore that stains much of our vast country.
Glaze experimentation is my passion and my work references just some of the amazing colours that this incredible land has to offer.
Textures, in the form of bespoke volcanic/crater glazes, adorn the outside of my hand-thrown pieces that I make from Australian Porcelain and high iron stoneware clays.
Australian raw earth minerals and oxides are incorporated into both clay and glazes, capturing not only the spirit of the land, but the true essence of Australia, each piece a unique work of art. |
