About Me

Introduction

My name is Martha Lucia Paez Villamizar. I am from Bogota, Colombia , South America. I make pieces in Stoneware and Earthware with Terra Sigillata I am interested in knowing other techniques and reinforcing the ones that I know.

What I Love about Ceramics

Contact with clay is very therapeutic for me. And it is fascinating what is achieved with contact with fire.

How I started with ceramics

Since I was little I had an attraction for clay. Over time I had the opportunity to study ceramics in the state of Dutchess in NY for almost 3 years.

What inspires me

Here in my country Colombia. We have a lot of traditional pottery. And our ancestors used ceramics in almost all daily tasks. That inspired me a lot. And for that reason, I am very attracted to rustic finishes such as earthware. And when I studied it was fascinating to see the change that is achieved at high temperatures with glazes.

What I'm working on at the moment

I am doing research with local clays, creating Terra Sigillata to use in my sculptures.

My Artist Statement

My work reflects nature in many ways. I love textures and I try to make them part of my sculptures. Rustic and smoked finishes are part of my new project.
