About Me

Introduction	My name is Martha Lucia Paez Villamizar. I am from Bogota, Colombia , South America. I make pieces in Stoneware and Earthware with Terra Sigillata I am interested in knowing other techniques and reinforcing the ones that I know. Currently dedicated to creating sculptural work in locally sourced porcelain mixed with paper fiber, fired in a high-temperature gas kiln. My work emerges from the exploration of organic forms inspired by nature, where fragility and strength coexist in balance. Over the years, I have strengthened my creative processes to consolidate an identity that reflects the quality and craftsmanship of contemporary ceramic art in Colombia. Through constant research into techniques, materials, and processes, I combine different modeling and finishing methods on a base that functions as a canvas, later transformed by chemical processes and the action of fire. Each piece is unique: the fire acts as an unpredictable ally that redefines textures, tones, and surfaces. The most meaningful aspect of my trajectory is this ongoing pursuit of evolution, where technique, sensitivity, and experimentation come together to demonstrate that in ceramics there are no limits to creativity. Without leaving aside utilitarian objects—which have been the foundation for experimenting with construction and finishing techniques—my projects mark this evolution: “CHIROSAS” (the series for which I received the 2025 “Hecho a Mano” Quality Seal), my first collection of fantastical hens; “AVITAT,” where object and environment enter into dialogue; “MAGICAL GARDENS” (2023), inspired by nature; and “FANTASTIC GARDENS” (2025), where the unreal and the magical intertwine. At the same time, I share my experience by teaching processes and techniques, convinced that creativity has no limits when knowledge supports imagination.
What I Love about Ceramics	Contact with clay is very therapeutic for me. And it is fascinating what is achieved with contact with fire.
How I started with ceramics	Since I was little I had an attraction for clay. Over time I had the opportunity to study ceramics in the state of Dutchess in NY for almost 3 years.
What inspires me	Here in my country Colombia. We have a lot of traditional pottery. And our ancestors used ceramics in almost all daily tasks. That inspired me a lot. And for that reason, I am very attracted to rustic finishes such as earthware. And when I studied it was fascinating to see the change that is achieved at high temperatures with glazes.
What I'm working on at the moment	I am doing research with local clays, creating Terra Sigillata to use in my sculptures.
My Artist Statement	My work reflects nature in many ways. I love textures and I try to make them part of my sculptures. Rustic and smoked finishes are part of my new project.
