About Me

Introduction

My name is Denise McDonald and I was born in Sydney Australia. I obtained a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture before changing direction and getting a Diploma of Art (Ceramics) at Holmesglen TAFE, Vic. I completed the Traineeship at Dartington Pottery in Devon England and ended up living in England for 10 years, working as an assistant to artist-potter Louise Gilbert-Scott for some of that time as well as working in a Bank. I have also worked in production potteries in Sydney (Omelette Design) and in Melbourne (Tabletop Ceramics).

I consider myself a small batch production potter, being comfortable on the wheel as well as working with an interesting technique that brings textured slabs to the wheel.

What I Love about Ceramics

Tactile expressive spontaneous qualities

Combination of art and science.

How I started with ceramics

As a child playing with bought and found clay.

What inspires me

The process. Nature. Historical pots and patterns

What I'm working on at the moment

Flannel Flower tableware, Scribbly Gum tableware

My Artist Statement

Denise McDonald produces ranges of ceramic tableware that bring together a celebration of our unique Australian flora with a love of heritage motifs and rich glazes. This fusion results in pieces that have a contemporary design with a hint of nostalgia. You will find 100 year old flannel flower patterns, embossed Fishbone fern and scribbly gum wiggles on functional stoneware and porcelain.

Denise has a design degree and ceramics diploma and has trained in potteries in England and Australia to learn her craft from the roots up. She uses time honoured skills and new innovative techniques to make art for everyday living. She fires in an electric kiln at her studio in Sydney to produce work under her business name DM Pottery.
